Civil rights movements 'being hijacked by Antifa types'

Australian National University’s Mark Kenny says “what’s really concerning, particularly for the longstanding civil rights organisations, is the possibility that all of this is being hijacked by Antifa types” as violent demonstrations continue across the US.

“They are intent on just making mayhem and upsetting the status quo as much as they can,” Mr Kenny told Sky News.

The demonstrations broke out across the country following the death of unarmed black man, George Floyd, who was killed by police.

“And of course in amongst all of those are the opportunists such as the street criminals who are on the margins of society and taking the opportunity to break things and steal,” Mr Kenny said.

“It’s bringing out the worst on that side and the worst on the police side due to an egregious act of police brutality that resulted in death.

“And the president, who could be showing leadership, is showing the precise opposite.”
