Dozens gathered and cheered on Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia on Thursday when the statue of Confederate Naval officer Matthew Maury was removed along with two statues of cannons.

Mayor of Richmond, Virginia, Levar Stoney had announced an executive order on Wednesday to have all Confederate statues immediately removed. Yesterday the statue of Stonewall Jackson on the same street was also been removed to a similarly celebratory reaction from a local crowd.

"All of them got to go, all of them got to go. Do you know why they put them all on this street? And named it Monument Avenue? It's a segregation tool. So that way, no one of African descent would ever own any homes in this area. Let's think about it," exclaimed an armed Black Lives Matter activist attending the removal. "Even if they were allowed to, who the hell wants to drive by somebody who killed and raped our ancestors," he went on to say.

Matthew Maury was known as the "Father of Modern Oceanography and Naval Meteorology," after his illustrious naval and oceanography career. He fought for the confederates during the American civil war and helped the South establish a naval force.

Demonstrators across the country have been demanding the removal of such Confederate monuments, as they see them as instruments of racial oppression.
