It’s a September night in 1930s Los Angeles, and a troubled young woman throws herself from the top of the famous Hollywood sign. Yet even though her body is recovered from the ravine below, the tragic story doesn’t end there. More than 80 years after her untimely death, this wannabe starlet is said to still wander the Californian hills where she met her end.

For almost 100 years, the iconic sign has kept watch over the Hollywood district of Los Angeles, California, welcoming the countless young hopefuls who continually arrive in search of fortune and fame. But the entertainment industry is tough, and many of these aspiring stars will leave the city with broken dreams.

Today, Hollywood of course remains a massive player in the global movie industry, but back in the 1930s, it was the undisputed entertainment capital of the world. For the preceding two decades, it had been home to a number of major production companies. And as a result, anyone with an interest in appearing on the silver screen was flocking to the Los Angeles hills.

For those living in a country caught in the grip of the Great Depression, the glitz of Hollywood was a welcome distraction. Beginning in 1929, the economic crash had seen unemployment soar to 25 percent in the United States. But even though money was tight, movie theaters continued to welcome as many as 80 million visitors a week.

With their blend of escapism and subtle commentary on current affairs, the movies must have seemed the perfect place to retreat from the grim economic reality of the time. It wasn’t just the finished product that was drawing crowds, however. Behind the scenes, countless young actors and actresses were also drawn to Hollywood’s unique appeal.

One of the many young men and women caught under the city’s spell was Millicent Lilian Entwistle, known as Peg. Born in Glamorgan, Wales, in 1908, Entwistle lived in London with her parents before her mother left for unknown reasons.

In time, her father remarried, and Entwistle traveled with her new family to the United States in search of a new life. Tragically, though, both her father and stepmother soon drew their last breaths; and as a result she, along with her two stepbrothers, went to live with an uncle in New York City.

Entwistle’s uncle was responsible for managing a Broadway star, and sure enough, his niece soon caught the showbiz bug. The young woman clearly took to it all well, too, and come 1925 she was on the stage. In fact, it was Entwistle’s performance as Hedvig in The Wild Duck, a play by Henrik Ibsen, that is said to have inspired a young Bette Davis to start acting.

The following year, Entwistle began performing on Broadway, where she would appear in a total of ten plays. Most famously, she starred alongside Sidney Toler in the hit show Tommy; indeed, it was a role that she would take on some 232 times. She fostered a desire to play more challenging parts, however.
