Hundreds of demonstrators marched across Belgrade on Sunday to protest against mandatory vaccinations for certain at risk groups.
The organisers, the Civic Initiative for Optional Vaccination group, called on Serbian officials to urgently review the law on the 'program of mandatory and recommended immunisation,' adopted on the last day of the recent state of emergency in the country.
Aleksandra Jevremovic, who came with her two children, said she joined the rally "to encourage all people who are against the encroachment on freedom of choice and conscience, and to show people by my example how children can be healthy without vaccines."
The rally, convened under the slogan 'I want to choose', concluded outside the Radio Television of Serbia building in an attempt to draw the attention of the country's public broadcaster to the issue.
Vaccination has led to the total eradication of smallpox, which is estimated to have resulted in hundreds of millions of deaths throughout human history, with other mass vaccination campaigns resulting in the near elimination of many infectious diseases from large portions of the globe.
According to the World Health Organization, as well as the vast majority of medical bodies, vaccination remains one of the simplest and safest ways of preventing disease.
