MPs’ self-approved $2,300 salary increase is ‘self-serving’ says taxpayers’ group

While salary increases for parliamentarians are determined by a federal law, a secretive multi-party committee of MPs that oversees the House of Commons administration can decline a pay raise, and move to freeze their salaries through legislation.

With the Board of Internal Economy’s approval though, MPs will take home a base salary of $172,700 this year, up from $170,400 last year.

Pension and severance payments released for Canada's defeated or retired MPs

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has released its calculations of estimated pension and severance payments paid to the 94 Members of Parliament who were either defeated or did not seek re-election in the Oct. 21 election.

Eleven of the 94 MPs leaving are from B.C.

Liberal candidate for Cloverdale-Langley City John Aidag, who was elected in 2015 and unseated by Conservative Tamara Jansen, will receive $95,000 in severance for his four years as an MP, but no pension.
NDP candidate for Skeena-Bulkley Valley Nathan Cullen, who served 15 years as MP but resigned this year, will receive $89,000 in severance and an annual pension of $82,000, or a lifetime pension of $4.1 million.

Ex-senator's widow, 27, set to receive millions in pension

Former Liberal senator Rod Zimmer died Tuesday at 73, but his pension lives on. His controversial wife, Maygan Sensenberger, will collect $19,700 a year for the rest of her life, according to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. Considering she’s only 27, that could mean millions to Canadian taxpayers.

Zimmer was long known as an athlete, fundraiser and corporate executive but he was most recently famous for his young wife and her legal troubles.

In 2012, Sensenberger was charged with causing a disturbance on a flight, for which she received a suspended sentence.

ACLU Wants to Put Tampons in Men’s Bathrooms For ‘Menstrual Equity’

t looks like The American Civil Liberties Union wants menstrual equality, and they want it now! ACLU is calling for men’s restrooms to include tampons in order to prevent any discrimination against “every person who menstruates.” Through a statement, the organization stated, “While free menstrual products are not uniformly provided in women’s restrooms, they are almost never available in men’s restrooms, even for pay.”

They also noted that men’s restrooms are less likely to have a place to dispose of the product privately, conveniently and hygienically. The group argued that it wasn’t a “full or accurate portrayal” to say that women are the only people who get pregnant, breastfeed, or menstruate. They added, “menstrual stigma and period poverty can hit trans and non-binary people particularly hard.”

Cuomo won’t let all judges officiate weddings — because some were appointed by Trump

So much for reaching across the aisle.

Gov. Cuomo just vetoed a bill that would have allowed all federal judges to officiate at weddings in New York — saying he can’t stomach the idea that even some of the jurists might be President Trump appointees.

“I cannot in good conscience support legislation that would authorize such actions by federal judges who are appointed by this federal administration,” Cuomo said in a statement Friday as he shot down the bill — which was passed overwhelmingly by the Democratic-controlled state legislature.
