The kick starter ratcheting pawl doesn't always want to engage when the bike is cold. This started to happen the last time I had the bike worked on by a so called professional! I know exactly what is wrong and will be fixing it when I'm more motivated. I had the "professional" replace the crank which is another story back when I was still working and didn't have the time at the time. The engagement ratchet, pawl and spring were not properly indexed. It's probably not off by much but enough to keep the spring from keeping the proper amount of pressure on the pawl when the bike is cold and temps are below 40F because of the oil thickening. Once the bike is warmed up a few minutes the kick starter works perfect.
