International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde missed a jail sentence by a whisker after being found guilty of negligence. Despite the conviction the judge said there was no need for a sentence. As French finance minister in 2008, she approved an award of $429 million to businessman Bernard Tapie for the disputed sale of a firm. The IMF had backed her through the judicial saga, and prosecutors said while she had made a bad decision, they did not see it as an offence. Ms Lagarde was not present in the court in Paris for the verdict, having left France for Washington. On Friday she told the trial she had always acted in good faith. It is not yet clear how far her reputation will be tarnished. Although there can be no appeal, her lawyer has said they will try to contest the ruling.
