Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza died mysteriously on June 8, 2020.
While officially his death has been attributed to a heart attack. Many suspect that he died from COVID-19. If true, he is the first head of state to die from COVID-19. Local media had earlier reported that his wife was suffering from COVID-19. Burundi has not followed any guidelines recommended by WHO to contain the virus and has undermined its threat. Mass rallies were organised for the elections that were held in May this year along with sporting events. Only 382 tests have been done in the country which has revealed 83 cases in a population of 11 million. The country also expelled four WHO experts who had questioned the government's response to the pandemic
President Nkurunziza was going to step down in August making way for his ally Evariste Ndayishimiye who won the May elections
