Human 2 0 A Wake Up Call To The World

I have a 70's book* where a psychoanalyst extensively interviewed a large number of "normal" college students about "life". He makes the shocking observation (P7) that "many I saw wanted to be virtual robots. Feeling unable to cope with their emotions, they would like the invulnerability and efficiency of an IBM machine ...They envy machines". I struggled to believe this at the time, that anyone other than a seriously damaged human being, could want to be like a machine. Yet here they are, lining up to be masked, tested and (in due course) to be injected and chipped. How did we arrive at this desperate state?
