Perfect Storm: President Trump Host Public Kavanaugh Swear In On Columbus Day As Hurricane Michael Threatens Florida
This year, the explorer’s namesake city in Ohio is saving a little money: Columbus has canceled its observation of Columbus Day altogether.
The mayor’s office announced the decision in a brief, unceremonious news release Friday, avoiding the politics that have traditionally accompanied changes to the controversial federal holiday in other cities. The mayor’s office has said this decision is not connected to the nationwide movement to rename Columbus Day as “Indigenous Peoples Day” because of Columbus’s enslavement and exploitation of native people.

Supreme Court Justices must all take two oaths before serving. One is a 62-word oath required by all federal judges, and the other is a constitutional oath.
Kavanaugh took both of his oaths in a private ceremony hours after the Senate voted to confirm his nomination. The Supreme Court said in a statement that both oaths were administered “so he can begin to participate in the work of the Court immediately.” A formal investiture ceremony will take place at a special sitting of the Court at a later date. A public, ceremonial swearing-in ceremony for Kavanaugh will happen Monday night
Hurricane watches have been posted on the northeast Florida Gulf Coast ahead of a strengthening Tropical Storm Michael in the northeast Caribbean. Michael could be near major hurricane strength as it approaches the Florida coastline by Wednesday with dangerous storm surge flooding, destructive winds and heavy rainfall.
Michael is currently centered about 90 miles east of Cozumel, Mexico, and is moving northward.
