Cyclone Amphan devastated south Bengal after landfall near Digha on May 20.

It killed 72 people, Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee said, announcing compensation for those affected
Sagar, Namkhana, Kultali & Patharpratima blocks of South 24 Pargana district were most affected: IMD. Kolkata reportedly suffered wind at 130 kmph — the fiercest in decades. The cyclone also hit coastal northern Odisha though with relatively less intensity
Amphan later moved north-northeasternwards to Bangladesh & weakened into a deep depression
IMD warned of heavy rainfall and winds at 30-40 kmph in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh & Meghalaya
Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured assistance on micro-blogging site Twitter. Amphan hit India amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic . The Bay of Bengal have faced the deadliest cyclones in history. It is also the largest bay in the world, nearly 50 crore people live along its coast.
