How does the earth move in global Lockdown due to COVID-19? Seismic noise detectors in London, Paris and Brussels record huge drop in vibrations. Noises from human activities are used to mask the sound of seismic activity beneath the soil. A seismologist from Royal Observatory of Belgium reported 33% lesser noise level on March 27 . This could help detectors to spot smaller earthquakes. This could also boost efforts to monitor volcanic activity and other seismic events. Seismometers detect seismic waves (vibrations) in the Earth's crust. But they also pick up human-induced noises which show as high-frequency noise. If the lockdown continues longer, city-based detectors may detect the earthquake aftershock better.
Stations purposefully located in remote areas or deep boreholes to avoid human noise may not be affected by this change.
