Canada’s virus aid package provides monthly payments, defers student loans

Canada’s C$27 billion ($18.8 billion) aid package will give people affected by the coronavirus outbreak C$2,000 a month and delay student loan repayments, among other measures to boost the economy, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Wednesday.

C$2,000 is equivalent to about $1,410.

The bill also includes C$55 billion in the form of tax deferrals. Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau said additional measures would be unveiled "in coming days," with expectations for aid to the struggling airline and energy sectors.

After almost a day of wrangling, the House of Commons agreed early on Wednesday to approve the stimulus. The Canada Emergency Response Benefit bill passed the Senate, and is expected to get royal assent, a formality, later on Wednesday.

Canada doubles value of coronavirus stimulus package, promises cash, loan delays

Canada has almost doubled the value of an aid package to help people and businesses deal with losses from the coronavirus outbreak, with Ottawa handing out more money than forecast, Finance Minister Bill Morneau said on Wednesday.

The package is worth C$52 billion ($36.62 billion), up from an initial C$27 billion outlined last week.

“That is a significant change because of the scale and the significance for people of these benefits,” Morneau said.

More than a million people signed up for unemployment benefits in the last week.

Senate OKs $2T coronavirus stimulus package in unanimous vote; House sets Friday vote

By a vote of 96-0, the Senate passed a massive $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus compromise package just before midnight Wednesday, ending days of deadlock and sending the bill to the House of Representatives -- which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said will soon take up the historic measure to bring relief to individuals, small businesses, and larger corporations "with strong bipartisan support."

The 880-page legislation is the largest economic relief bill in U.S. history. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., appeared somber and exhausted as he announced the vote. He released senators from Washington until April 20, though he promised to recall them if needed.

What San Francisco looks like on the first day of sheltering in place

San Francisco was eerily quiet Tuesday after an order to shelter in place went into effect at midnight.
Residents hunkered down and traffic was light, similar to that of a holiday but minus the cheer.
The biggest gathering of people early Tuesday may have been at healthcare facilities and drugstores. About 16 people congregated outside one drugstore, waiting for it to open.
