Countries have not done enough to limit global average temperature rise to 1.5° Celsius.
This is the key message coming out of UNEP’s Emission Gap Report (2019). The highlights of the report include:
Paris targets can be met only if emissions are reduced drastically between 2020 and 2030. The world is staring at a 3.2° Celsius rise in temperature with the current unconditional pledges. Collective ambition must increase more than fivefold to keep temperature rise to 1.5° Celsius.

Annual emissions in 2030 need to be 32 gigatonnes lower than what the current pledges offer

This would mean GHG emissions would have to fall by 7.6% each year between 2020 and 2030. GHG emissions have increased by 1.5% every year since the last decade. Global GHG emissions saw a new high in 2018 when it touched 55.3 gigatonnes. 2020 is an important year when countries will be asked to review their climate pledges
