With regular glaciers and snow melting in Antarctica, another shocking images by a NASA satellite, shows 20% loss of ice in just 10 days. The little Eagle Island located off the coast of Graham Land in the Antarctic, was the latest victim of the threatening climate change. These images were captured by the Operational Land Imager on the Landsat-8 satellite. It shows the difference on the island ice cap, on February 4 and February 13, 2020. According to a glaciologist, this warming event caused 1.5 sq kms of the snow to become saturated with meltwater. The temperatures reached as high as 18 degrees C (64.9 degrees F). Climate model suggests that the Island experienced the most melt on February 6, losing about 1 inch (3 cms) of the snowpack. Further, about 4 inches (10.6 cms) was lost only between February 6 to February 11. Eagle Island lost 20% of the seasonal snow accumulation in this single warming event. The rapid melting of glaciers and snow results in rising sea levels and affects the
atmospheric cycle accordingly.
