This old 1944 Republic Pictures black-and-white serial film, originally a 15 chapters series, was loosely based on the 1941 Captain America character created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, that first appeared in Captain America Comics #1, published at the time by Timely Comics, today known as Marvel Comics. Dick Purcell played a different version Captain America, while Lorna Gray played Gail Richards, the secretary. The movie serial stands as the very first theatrical release connected to a Marvel character. Captain America would only re-appear in the 1966 animated series, "The Marvel Super Heroes", also featuring segments of Thor, Iron Man, Hulk and Namor The Sub-Mariner, where other Avengers also appeared and even the original X-Men. In this movie serial, instead of Steve Rogers, District Attorney Grant Gardner is Captain America, trying to stop the plans of the Scarab. Personally to connect it all together, I could easily imagine that after the original Captain America Steve Rogers disappeared at the end of World War 2, that others might have taken on the mantle of the red white and blue, so the enemy would continue to fear repercussions, if they ever tried anything. Et Voila :-)
