Starting back in 1972 when Maxwell Atchisson created the Atchisson Assault Shotgun

20-shot or 32-shot drum magazine
open bolt, gas-operated with a locked breech

10.49 lbs (4.76 kg) empty
13.35 lbs (6.06 kg) with loaded 20-shot drum

In the early 1990's Boje Cornils was hired on to improve the design and set up the tooling to produce the AA-12
