A New Phone Spy Tool? The IMU

Here comes a new tracking device once again misused for evil purposes. The Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) was initially developed for phones to allow for immersive games where you tilt and twist and shake the phone as game input. Then it moved it to being used for fitness by tracking the amount of physical activity you do and count your steps. But no sensor goes unobserved by the evil ones who will take advantage of these to track your every move.

POST-PUBLISH UPDATE:

Finally some good news. Some people with expertise with IMU have contacted me and I've verified that the IMU sensor does not work in the background on Android 9 and above, if you do not have Physical Activity permissions. It can work in the foreground but since it will be interrupted when the app goes in the background, the data collected will not be continuous and will not be as useful.

This means that the threat will be more on those apps that have Physical Activity permission enabled. It can also still be a threat in the foreground. And there are techniques to keep an app running without sleeping but I would have to test if you can still do this in Android 9 and Android 10.

So fortunately, this threat, at the moment, is not as serious as I imagined. It's still a threat but at least we can manage it by looking at all apps with Physical Activity permissions and apps that don't appear to go in the background. For example, I'd like to examine music player apps more closely. Don't have any conclusions yet but will keep an eye on it.
